The Bag Ladies

Messenger Bag - frontOk…in the blog-a-sphere…there’s an artist who has delegated  November as “Art Every Day Month.” She gently encourages those who participate to make art every day and blog about it. Since I only found out about this challenge yesterday, I’m a few days behind in starting.

So to start my challenge, I decided that sewing is an art. It needs some skill and talent in order for the finished project to look good. Yesterday to start the challenge, I finished a messenger bag that I needed to do for a class I’m teaching in December. The pattern is an Amy Butler High Street Messenger Bag design and the finished bag is nice.

messenger bag flapThe best part about the bag is the weight. Its not some flimsy batting filled bag. Within the bag is a layer of heavy duck canvas. Its loaded with pockets and zippers.

This is not the first time I made this bag. I also made one using Bark cloth that I bought in Hawaii a few years ago. My Hawaiian messenger bag was my carry on bag when I went to Houston. I really enjoyed carrying that bag.

So now there’s another one, made from more funky cool fabrics. I love all the words and the flower bud lining. I wonder if my sister thinks this bag is more cool than the rucksack I made. When the bag is finished being a class sample, it could be hers, if she wants.

Why would I make this bag to send to my sister? Well, we come from a long line of bag ladies. No…not the type that pushes the grocery cart, picking up empty soda bottles and cans.

My grandma Lantry would always carry a bag with her when she left the house. Today its called “being green,” back then its just what you did. Several years ago, my sister realized that she and I both have a habit of collecting and carrying bags. Not purses, but tote bags.

messenger bag backI must have at least 20 or 30, that I use for various purposes and to store my current projects. However, I’m always look for another. I’m attracted to them like some women are to fancy shoes. I especially love making them. Sometimes the finished bag is great…sometimes I’m ready to give it away as soon as its made (or not at all).

Anyway, I like this messenger bag and I’ll probably make at least one more. And sister, if you want to add it to your collection…just let me know. ‘Cuz you know a bag lady can’t have enough bags.

In a separate email she writes…”I not only want the bag, I want the pattern.” Well, here’s the pattern link: http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/products/patterns_display.php?id=26

Although, I would suggest you come for a visit with lots of fabric and we can make it together.
