Mission Accomplished

January 3rd, 2009 by Nanette

I know sometimes we’re harder on ourselves than we should be. Over the months of November and December, I felt like I hadn’t accomplished much creatively. There’s always that “other” idea in my head that yearns for me to turn it into reality.

I have so many projects started and many more in my head waiting for their day. Because of this, I often forget about what I’ve actually finished. One of the goals I had the last couple of weeks is to finish a project. I knew that DH and I wouldn’t be doing much over the holiday. We tend to spend a lot of  (much needed) time together this time of year. I enjoy that. We catch up on our NetFlix picks and eat too much. During this anticipated down-time, I wanted to finish!! something. Unfortunately, (go figure) everything I had started realistically could not get finished in 2 weeks. So, I started something new.

Lynn's mitten YarnMy friend, Lynn Koolish, hand-dyed some yarn for me a few months back. Lynn is an accomplished writer, designer, teacher, and editor. Her latest book, just released, is called “Fast, Fun, and Easy Fabric Dyeing” by C&T Publishing. I love this book and the yarn she dyed for me. I see some dye purchases in my future.

For my goal, I wound the yarn that Lynn made for me (see Whatcha Majig) and I started knitting a pair of mittens. MittensI haven’t worn mittens in decades and I never made a pair before.  I just thought the project would finish quickly…well at least within 2 weeks of on again, off again knitting. As you can see I accomplished my goal. I love this yarn (worsted weight “Bare” from KnitPicks) and I love the colors Lynn chose for the dye. I’m glad I challenged myself.

Today, as I sit her writing this, I think about all that I’ve accomplished the last few months. Although, I “felt” like I didn’t do much, I realize that many of my creative projects were finished. I have taken many steps to becoming more accomplished at what I do and I have surrounded myself with some very supportive friends. It will be interesting to see how 2009 unfolds. All I know is things feel good right now and taking little steps eventually leads to big progress. This is a good place to be. Anyone for a snow ball fight?

I love your mittens – they came out beautifully. Dyeing the yarn was so fun and easy. It’s so rewarding to see the finished product made with it. Thanks, Nanette.

Your down time with hubby sounds like it was just what the Dr. ordered to wind down from a busy year, reflect on all the things accomplished and re-energize for a New Year that is sure to be jam packed with more creative accomplishments. The mittens remind me of the good ole’ days back home, comfy and cozy on a cold winter’s day. Love em!

Hi Nanette! Came across your blog from Deb’s. It seems like you and I are on the same wavelength. I’ve been “felting” hearts to with my embellisher. I’m having a blast playing with it. I love what you are doing here – such a variety of cool stuff. The fulling felting (?) is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been researching books on felting as I’d really love to learn wet felting and that fulling that you’ve been doing – beautiful. Also love the mittens. Very colorful, textural variety of eye candy you’ve got going on here. I’m going to link to you, if it’s ok. Tried to comment above – but it said, “no comments”.
Hope you’re enjoying this beautiful snowy day!
