Why do we create?
Why is it that some of us are obsessed with creating? And, others have not desire? Some would rather watch TV or run a marathon. But then there’s those of us that must create to feel centered in life. Is this some modern phenomena?
I think of my grandmothers. They created fabulous hand-made clothes and beautiful crocheted blankets. Was this more of a utilitarian need for them? In those days, it was cheaper to buy yard goods and make your own outfits. The Depression years hit them hard. They were most resourceful, making their own bread, jams and pickles. But, I’m curious if they created these things more because they wanted to or only because they needed to. Maybe a little of both?
I lost my grandparents and mother early in life. As an adult, I think about them and wish I could ask them the questions I have. The older women in my life really influenced my creativity. I can visualize all of them in some creative task. I just wonder if they enjoyed what they did or if it was just another chore?
On the other had, if their creative outlets were greatly utilitarian in origin, maybe that’s why I crave creativity. With fast food and convenient shopping, we’ve lost the “need” to be creative. It could be some genetic coding in us, without a survival-based purpose to our creativity, maybe that’s why we seek outlets for our creativity.
Like the jack russell terrier who insists on digging or the sheepdog that insists on herding, our genes may be telling us to keep creating. It was bred into us through generations of hard working homemakers. Yes, its easier and cheaper to buy our home decor, personal apparel, and housewares from the store. But, there is something greatly comforting to know that I made the quilt, blanket, jewelry or wall art and that I can share these “gifts” with family and friends.
